Week 2: Imaginary Journey - Hélène Boullé
At the young age of twelve, Hélène was married Samuel de Champlain, a french explorer who founded Quebec City or New France, on July 3rd, 1608 (3). They wed in 1610 but Hélène continued to live with her parents for two years afterward due to her being 31 years younger than Champlain. Arranged marriages of noble persons during seventeenth century France were quite common, and many women were married before the age of eighteen (1). Champlain received a dowry of six thousand livres for the marriage which helped fund more of his explorations (1). There are no records saying what the relationship between Champlain and Boulle was like, if it was loving or merely existed. The two never had any children. Helene did not accompany Champlain to Quebec until 1620 (5). The natives of Quebec were intrigued by her fine clothes and mannerisms which were exotic to them.

Boulle joined Champlain on his journey to New France in 1620. They arrived at Tadoussac after what we can assume was a long, rough journey across the Atlantic (2). Although her younger brother Eustache also lived in Quebec and worked as Champlain's lieutenant, Hélène only stayed in Quebec for four short years. Most people in New France had very little as everything had to be imported. Only the very privileged owned more than one suit. Hélène, who was used to lively Paris must have felt isolated with her husband being constantly occupied with his duties and she missed her cosmopolitan life so she returned to Paris in 1624 and never returned to New France again (5).
